Green Power

Green power is electricity generated from clean, renewable resources like the sun and wind.  You can buy blocks of green power through Green Power Switch or make your own green energy by becoming a Generation Partner.

Green Power Switch

Each $4 block of green power is about 12 percent of a typical household's monthly energy use (150 kilowatt-hours).  Green power cost more because the technology used to capture these renewable resources is more expensive than traditional power generation methods.

Wind Power
Wind turbines can generate electric power anywhere the wind blows steady and strong. Large blades are attached to the shaft of an efficient electric generator.  Eighteen turbines have been added to TVA's wind power generating site on Buffalo Mountain near Oak Ridge, TN.

Solar Power
The sun is an incredibly powerful source of energy. Photovoltaic panels harness that power and transform solar energy into usable electricity. When sun rays hit a solar panel, some of the electrons inside become charged and create an electrical current.

Methane Gas
There's treasure in your trash. Using methane gas as fuel to power an electric generator actually helps reduce air pollution. Unlike when it's released directly into the atmosphere as a potent greenhouse gas. Energy recovered from methane eliminates the consumption of more than 20,000 tons of coal per year.

Although no source of energy is impact-free, renewable resources create less waste and pollution.  In fact, a green power investment of $8 per month on your electric bill is equivalent to not driving your car for four months.

Generation Partners

TVA is offering new incentives for customers to help increase the supply of renewable energy in the Tennessee Valley.  Generation Partners provides technical support and incentives for homes and businesses that generate their own renewable power.  The startup incentive for customers to help offset installation costs has been doubled to $1,000.
Also, TVA has added biomass and low-impact hydropower to the Generation Partners program.  Previously, only solar and wind generation were eligible.

How it Works
TVA buys all of the green power you generate at a rate of 12 cents per kilowatt-hour for solar and 3 cents per kilowatt-hour for other renewables above the local electric rate.  Payment is made in the form of a credit on your monthly NES bill.  You may also qualify for federal tax credits.
TVA currently gets fewer than 50 megawatts of power from renewable sources.  But they have a goal of buying up to 2,000 megawatts of wind, solar or biomass and increasing purchases through Generation Partners up to another 200 megawatts.
